First of all, lemme say this: Mom, the answer to the question “do you want to go to wal-mart?” is always NO!
Now that thats out of the way, Jordan over on BC has written an article entitled “Seven Essential Songs of the Road“
Considering the last time I did any distance driving, I was pulled over for speeding while listening to a CD of Irish fiddle music that Tami gave me, I know that the music one listens to while driving can strongly effect the way one drives. I had been listening to Type O Negative that entire trip, but the moment I switched to the fiddle music - lead-foot. What can I say?
My drive when moving to New Orleans - Current 93 and Coil the entire way - not one speeding ticket.
Anyway I’ve put together my own list of driving songs.
Roy Orbison’s I drove all night sort of goes without saying, doesn’t it? Ace of Spades by Motorhead, This Corrosion by Sisters of Mercy, Wreck on the Highway by the Louvin Brothers (to remind you to drive safely), just about anything by Johnny Cash, The Chauffeur by Duran Duran (yeah thats right, I mentioned Duran Duran in the same paragraph as Motorhead - so sue me), Tupelo by Nick Cave (works especially well if you’re actually going to Tupelo.) How about Autobahn by Kraftwerk? And of course, Sex on Wheels by Thrill Kill Kult.
I suppose its almost a requirement to add The CB Song by the Legendary Shackshakers, ever since that fucking Geico commercial. Love the song, not too thrilled with those commercials. I want to know the name of the man who drew parallels between the name “Geico”, and a gecko. NOT the same thing, people.
I never paid that speeding ticket, so my driver’s lisence is now suspended, so I’m not that concerned with driving music these days.Music to write by is more important - especially with me doing nanowrimo.
I’m not sure why, but my characters tend to get their own theme song, which I listen to while writing the POV of that character. Giving them a song also gives them a ‘mood’, and listening to the song while writing the character helps me write their ‘voice’ cohesively. Music is a kind of mnemonic device I suppose. So Claudius is definitely Requiem by Project Pitchfork, while Damiano is more Venus Blue by Acid Bath.
Situations and places get theme songs too. A huge war scene might get SunnO, but a one on one combat scene might get some VNV (the dance beats help me choreograph). A barfight - Motorhead or maybe Balzac for something a little quirkier.
Music I don’t like: Any music that uses the word “sex” as a verb.
Technorati Tags: driving music, writing music, sex as a verb, barfights, theme songs

Hah! Don’t get me started, but my number one song would be:
Canned Heat.. On the road again!
Does nanowrimo hand out speeding tickets to early finishers? Best of inspiration on the writing Che!
Woef!
I would also have to add “Wagon Wheel” by OCMS - perfect driving song. And for early morning just before dawn, 20 miles outta memphis driving, “The Queen of the Bell Witch Opry” by Pine Hill Haints. An awsome band, by the way - Pine Hill Haints come highly recommended by me.
That you mentioned Duran Duran at all deserves praises. I myself happened to love them, not becuase of any music talent, but because I thought John Taylor was beautiful. Hey, I was 15.
But that passion didn’t fade. Mojo did say to me “The Chauffeur isn’t like their other music. It’s good.” He had no idea that was a song of theirs. Wasn’t exactly a top 10 hit.
Sorry that I gayed up your posting on music. As you know from our conversations about music in the past, the music gene did not get passed on to me. I can abstractly understand that this influenced that and this movement led to that movement, but music just doesn’t move me like it does Mojo or anybody else I know.
But I do know I hate Duran Duran’s Rio.
Sometimes I feel like Beth when she asked you many years ago, “What is that you are listening to? Skanky Kitty?”
Many bands are Skanky Kitty to me.
Now look - I’ll allow no disparaging remarks about Skinny Puppy on this site, even if they’re quoted from Beth. My love for Skinny Puppy endures just like your love for John Taylor. Who was, by the way, purdy hot.
I had a boyfriend who thought he looked like John Taylor. (He didn’t), but because he was a Duran Duran fan, their music brings back some fond - and weird - memories of the 80s for me.
But Mojo is right. The Chauffeur isn’t like their other songs - its good. Which really annoys me because it shows they could have done good music all the fucking time (or maybe some of the time) - or maybe it was just some sort of fluke or something. Who knows what the hell happened, but I like the song, and its a good driving song, being about cars and birds and sweat and stuff.
Yes, we’re all aware that you are a musical retard, but its okay, we love ye anyway. And really, by now we expect you to gay up this website.
But Beth so wanted to love Skanky Kitty!
I wonder what my list of favorite songs would reveal about my musical retardedness? Probably that I’m gay. I was talking to my assistant at work the other day about movie history (as you do) and she noted that all the movies I talked about either starred black and white era movie queens (like Katharine Hepburn and Rita Hayworth) or black and white era movie queens (like Montgomery Clift and James Dean). What’re ya gonna do?
But this is about music! Music! Mojo is upstairs now washing dishes and he is listening to Bonnie Raitt. He has a very ecclectic taste in music (although a lesbian friend of ours once said he liked more lesbian music than she did).
See, I try to talk about my musical taste and immediately switch to Mojo!
I admit helplessness.
Hmmm… I think i don’t have a musical taste either. I like just about everything. That’s pretty tasteless isn’t it?
If you like everything, that is pretty tasteFUL.
Bennet Cerf would have been proud of that one!
I for one think Bas has exceptional taste in music. Diverse, sure, but its all good. Thumbs up on Bas’ musical taste.
Well, having no taste myself I’ll take your word for it. Right now, while cooking pumpkin pies for tomorrow, Mojo is listening to Aimee Mann, and I like it, especially the song Red Vines, but I had to ask just now “Who is this? What’s this song?” even though I’ve heard it 100 times before.
Aimee Mann from Til Tuesday. Also did some stuff on the Magnolia soundtrack. (love that movie) She’s also an anti-downloading tart. Get a grip aimee, don’t be such a capitalist pig.
