What do Google and Amazon have in common?

Fuck if I know but something weird and nefarious is going on. It all started with HIM. Yes, I’m referring to the Finnish band His Infernal Majesty. I’m not a crazed fan by any stretch of the imagination but on a rainy night they can make a nice listen. Sometimes I think their fans are a bit rabid and cultish and in their presence its probably a blasphemy to merely say I like HIM.

But there it is. I like HIM. Nothing more, nothing less.

But from the way their products are suddenly popping up on my Amazon recommendations, you’d think I’m a drooling groupie.

But why? I’ve never bought a single HIM record or product from Amazon. I’ve never even searched for them on Amazon. I don’t think I’ve even searched for any bands that could be considered remotely related to their music. I mostly search for books on Amazon. And yet, there they are, recommended out the ass everytime I go to amazon, or a related site. They even get recommended to me through my own site. Yet the only time I’ve searched for them in recent days is….

…through Google.

I did a single search looking for a list of older albums.

So what I want to know is, how did that Google search effect my Amazon recommendations? Is Google secretly doing evil? Should I be worried that thennext thing you know, the NSA is going to think that I’m in cahoots with Finnish love-terrorists?

And of course, if I now go and list a product of theirs in the space below, I get the feeling I’ll never get’em off my Amazon recommendations. But what the hell….

No, no!! It’s more evil.. It’s Amazon! They mark every transaction. If two people bought a book FROM you, who BOTH bought HIM… Then YOU should be interested in HIM.

I get the weirdest recommendations from Amazon, but can trace them back that way. I know for sure i once bought a book that -i suppose- is in every Naval officers’ collection. Anything pertaining seawarefare is now of my interest it seems!

Well, that WOULD be a good explanation, except that no one has bought HIM from me. Hell, no one has bought anything from me, so there goes that theory.

I’ll have you know that because I bought you the gnostic gospels on Amazon, I get emailed every few days recommending some new testament Christian something or other. They say that since I purchased the gnostic gospels, they are certain I would love to purchase “The Love of Jesus in all His Merciful Ways.”

No I would not. I most definitely would never, ever want to purchase that. Never!

It’s like I’m suddenly the most fundy fundy that ever funded.

But remember, Amazon gives me recommendations on The Shattered Prayer based on my previous purchases, so sometimes, even here, I get recommendations for Jesus and all his love.

    Sigh.

Well, I very much appreciate the gnostic gospels you sent me, and I’m sorry you have to suffer through the love of Jesus for having done so.

I’m especially disturbed that the love of Jesus should come so highly recommended through my site, but if its true what they say, then he’s everywhere and there’s little we can do about it.

The recommendation that is on this page right now? A Prayer for Owen. Apparently it is about a “dwarfish” boy who believes he is an instrumetn of God.

I have never expressed an interest in “dwarfish” (hey, that is the word they used on Amazon) instruments of God, but I may be missing out on something. We did used to say that we were interested in scrawny guys with a little something wrong with them.

HIM seems to have followed me from virtual reality into RT. I was walking to the library to return some books this morning and there on the sidewalk, right in my path, was a heartagram graffito.

    How does amazon do it?

Okay, now this isn’t funny. I blame this on Richard the Previous.

I’ve begun getting recommendations from Amazon for the Love of Jesus and related material.

I even got a recommendation for that book about the dwarfish instrument of God. (that sounds kind of… uh… never mind.)

I think I’d rather go back to getting recommendations for HIM. At least when one of their album covers pops up… well, lets face it, Ville Valo ain’t too hard on the eyes.

Ha ha ha! Dwarfish instrument of God! I am embarrassed that I didn’t think along those lines. Almighty indeed!
