Recently, a friend of ours asked us what we thought of Rosie O’Donnell. We said that we like her (I mean, overall). This response prompted a near-tirade from our friend who we think of as thoughtful, intelligent, and (yes), gay — about how Rosie is just white trash. Well, now, as potential white trash myself, or at least as someone related to white trash, I have to say that Rosie doesn’t quite qualify. I mean, she has only one partner, not two or more. AFAIK, she doesn’t have any illegitimate children running around. And she doesn’t sell drugs nor does she work at Wal Mart. So, unlike some of my family members, it’s unlikely that she is fully WT. Surely, somewhat WT, but all the way… and I know from WT.

She may be loud, pedantic, dogmatic, and somewhat common. But that’s why I like her and why I think we need her. She’s just like the rest of America, only she’s a liberal and she’s gay and she advances both those causes, which we need in this country. People see her as one of them for the most part, just like lots of folks think Dubya is a normal guy. People think he’s “a regular guy” (which he is not, of course), and they think of Rosie as a “regular gal” with kids and worries about their welfare (panics?). Is that a life for everyone? Nope. Is it even one I want? Not really. But Rosie is an effective counterpoint to the bullshit, unthinking conservatism that has swept this country, a la Dubya and his cronies. They are just as dogmatic and far more ignorant than all those jackasses. We need Rosie to show that “regular” people can have views that aren’t the conservative b.s. we hear all the time.

I think our friend just wants Rosie to be more intellectual, more thoughtful, less common, particularly as one of “our” representatives. That’s a fine position to take if you’re a northeastern educated middle to upper class person. Most American, however, do not fit this model and would be better served by having someone ‘like them’ they can see on TV. Sure, sometimes I wish she would just give it a rest (you know lesbians and their politics), but let’s keep it in perspective.

Besides, I think our friend would be appeased if Ro would just drop a few stone and dress up a bit. Wouldn’t we all?

Finally Mojo posts and congrats for that!
Not a big fan of Rosie but it’s more along the lines of the “give it a rest already” than anything.
You are right, she does need to be there to speak up. I think she should think about some of the stuff she says before she says it and I do get tired of her yelling all the time. But the more she yells, the more other people will hopefully speak up.
It’s the same thing in the black community that blacks will expect a person to be a spokesperson for the whole black race. Like one person could be a spokesperson or act a ‘certain’ way for all gays. sigh. it gets tiring doesn’t it?
A funny sidebar to Dubya, Comedian guy with his own show… Stewart ( I can’t think of his first name, although I can picture him)… said that Dubya is the only president that has looked healthier as his run as gone on. Most presidents start looking tired etc but Dubya has never been in better health. Made me laugh.

I think that you are right about that Shelley. When you get so few representations, eveyone wants to make sure it is a postive one.

But then you have to decide what is a positive one.

    John Stewart maybe?

Good post, and with good points. I understand why conservatives rail against Rosie. They’re assholes. And I myself get tired of Rosie talking endlessly about her kid - it doesn’t appeal to me. But I agree that she’s ‘just folks’ like the rest of us, and as such, a good representative.

Indeed. Thanks for the feedback, Shelley. I agree, she’s a little OTT, but we don’t have many options that can counter all the BS from our govt and ‘leaders’. They’re always so homophobic with all that right-wing fascist crap. Enough of them already. Anyone who shouts as loudly as they do (and boy do they, if you watch Fox “News”, is an appropriate counterpoint…

ha ha! yeah that’s the guy John Stewart!
Lord help my dying brain cells. Like John is such a difficult name to remember.
