Mojo makes fun of the place I work because we get Puerto Rican Pride Day off. He says they just invented the holiday so we could get lots of days off in November. I say everyone should be proud of the Puerto Ricans and take the Day off to celebrate that pride, whether they are Puerto Rican or not. In fact, everyone should get a holiday! There should be at least one “bank holiday” in every month! And everyone should be required to take these holidays off. No more half-assed Columbus Day Holidays (the most uncelebratedest Federal holiday in the U.S.) where most people are working and some aren’t. So here’s my list of days we should get off.
- January – MLK Day (as well as January 1st — can’t not have New Year’s Day off)
- February — Presidents’ Day (and I say split them up. One for Washington, one for Lincoln. That way we get two days off. Hell, let’s find out the birthday of all the presidents and take 43 days off — of course, we’ll take 2 days off for Grover Cleveland)
- March — Equinox Day
- April – Easter Day Passover Day (if either of these fall in March, we still get them off in April. Naturally Passover Day will fall on Friday and Easter will fall on Monday. It doesn’t matter when the days really fall. I want a four day weekend. I realize that it is illegal for banks to be closed 4 days in a row, but we’ll make an exception. I also realize that it is illegal for the Federal government to force states to recognize federal holidays, but we’ll find a way around that). We should also get off Tax Day.
- May — May Day, Memorial Day
- June — Gay Pride Day, Bisexual Pride Day
- July — Flag Day (that’ll stop those anti-flag burning amendment nuts from nattering on so much. Naturally, we’ll also have 4th of July off)
- August — Everyone who isn’t a Christian Gets a Day Day
- September – Labor Day
- October – Native American Day, Hallowe’en
- November – Veterans Day, Election Day (it’s only patriotic), Thanksgiving Day, the Day after Thanksgiving Day, and Puerto Rican Pride Day (by the way, this is really what I get off in November at my job)
- December — Solstice Day (as well as Christmas, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve — can’t deny that Christian Heritage, no matter how hard and how repeatedly we may try.)
Naturally, people with their own ethnic/regional/religious holidays can take them off as well (so we can take off Tahitimas), but these are the days everyone should celebrate!
Please, add your own. If we add about 92 more days to that list, then we’ll almost approach the number of holidays the Dutch get!

I note you have Winter solstice listed, but not summer solstice (aka, my birthday). You also left out the Candlemas (aka your birthday.)
I also think all americans should be given election-day off. But that might encourage people to vote and I don’t think the government really wants that.
Also, groundhog day.
We’ve been saying that here for years too - a day off each month! In Canada we have Christmas eve, Christmas and boxing day! I still don’t know what the hell boxing day is, other than the best day of the year to shop for deals, but who cares as long as it’s off.
I like the concept of a day day.
So I’m sneaking this comment out while at work.
How are you peeps? I’m finally feeling better. Still working on the recovery but not crying every night in bed in pain! Thank Goodness!
Doing physio and a friend of a friend hooked me up with a sound vibration machine which has been a Godsend!
Che? Are you nanowrimoing this year? I don’t think I’d better with the recovery and all.
Using spam names as characters is brilliant. Someone else blogged about it a few months back and I started keeping track of spam names. But using them for porn is even brillianter! ha ha!
Hope you are all well.

Doing good here, and so glad to hear you’re feeling better. We’ve been missing you, but don’t overdo it.
Richard, Steff and I are doing nanowrimo this year, and I wish you could join us but you’re right. Might be best not to attempt it just yet. We would like you to get well.
Maybe Richard could write an extra novel in your honor. Two novels in a month -how hard could it be. Stephen King does it all the time.
Its good to hear from you. Mmmm… sound vibrations. Godsend ay?
Good to see you here on SP again Shelley and so glad you’re feeling better! It isn’t the same here without you
Don’t give Che any ideas, Shelley. She always takes them to the dirtiest place and then mentions it to us. Uh, wait, nevermind. DO give Che ideas!
As for holidays, I say YES to at least one per month, preferably near the beginning. And another at the end. Plus 5 more in the middle.
Yay!
Here’s to partially well Shelley!
Hoping to have a full well Shelley soon!
And Che, how silly of me to forget those important days.
I think that we should also get off Canadian National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women too. It’s a good cause and Mojo could take off his birthday too!
Hey Shelley! Good news!
Days, days, days.. geh, you got to think big… Dutch pride month. Just a months’ worth of partying for no good reason. Maybe better to call it Dutch Courage month.
See… those Dutch have it right. A whole month of partying. Reason number 408 to move to the Netherlands.
Leave it to the Dutch to out holiday us!
I think Dutch Courage Month should be one of the holidays.
And make it one of those long months.
Not February.
Like August. It is too hot to go to work in August.
Yeah! August! Dutch Courage Month!
Perfect.
