But am I right? Has this been the crappiest season of TV ever?
Take Heroes, for example. I came late to Heroes, and watched the first season in re-runs. Ended up lurvin’ it. But this season… WTF? Hiro goes back in time, and I don’t care. Claire goes to high-school and tries out for cheerleading. I care even less. Peter Petrelli falls in love with dull Irishwoman. So don’t care. Don’t care don’t care don’t care.
Then there’s Smallville. Last season, it all got pretty gritty. Kind of dark. Violent even. I had some high hopes for Supergirl when she showed up, but what does she go and do? Join a beauty content? Sigh. And of course, I just don’t care.
And what is going on with Stargate Atlantis? Okay, Friday night’s episode I really liked. Wraith are back, still weird, still nasty. But… Friday’s episode was also a testament to how little attention I’ve been paying to the show recently because who the hell did Teyla fuck to get pregnant? All I remember from the previous show was her yelling “my people!” a lot. And see.. I don’t care about her “people”. Don’t care about Ronon’s “people”. Don’t much care about anyone’s “people”. In our global society this tribal shit gets old real quick. Get over your people and fight the goddam Wraith already.
Okay, and please please please don’t let Supernatural become “just another show I watch for the hot guys.” At the end of last season, Hell was loosed upon the world. Hell. Which is a pretty big place, with lots of nasty things in it. Alright, you’d think this might contribute just a little bit to the continuing plotline, but what do we get this season? What was that… little Red Riding Hood? Oh and.. hey… Sam might be the anti-christ. Could we maybe get an episode on that, please? Now I know the writers have said they don’t want to serialize the show too much and still concentrate on individual episodes, etc etc etc… but don’t bring up all this cool shit and then leave me wondering, cuz then I’m gonna have to keep watching through all the little red riding hood crap.
Even Ghost Hunters has been kind of dull. I mean, I liked the show better when it was all grass-roots and flying by the seat of one’s pants kind of stuff. Now it seems like the producers are saying, “you guys need to go to some scarier places!” I mean.. no, thats not what its about. I really really don’t want to see the ghost-hunters lose their sincerity, and I thought putting Josh Gates - one of the most insincere “paranormal investigators” I’ve ever seen - in the Hallowe’en special was a really bad direction to go in. I felt like the Sci Fi channel did it as a ploy to rescue Josh Gates’ show, which should never be rescued.
Anyway, its obvious TV isn’t a distraction from writing. Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t myriad other distractions. Mostly Thanksgiving-related crap. Oh and KK - there’s a hell of a distraction.
I wanted to have 40K by the end of the weekend, but it looks like its going to be more like 35K. Still, I’ve reached that magical stage where the story has become so much more important than winning a word-count, which is how I know I’m going to get the word-count. If I gave a shit, I’d never make 50K, but with the story calling me to write, I’m sure to make it just fine.
For those of you gearing up for Thanksgiving, have a good one. For those of you who live in strange foreign countries where gluttonous holidays are less frequent, why not spend a day overeating, just out of sympathy? Could be fun.

You’re right about TV. Not many distractions there. Good thing cuz we have a lot of distractions getting ready for Thanksgiving, given that we’re hosting it. It’s usually a good time (overall), so I guess there will be some payoff, but still.
Glad the writing is going well. That’s a lot of writing!
I remember one Thanksgiving when Richard and I were distracted all day, for 24 hours straight. That was the MST3K marathon, of course. I mention that every Thanksgiving, because it was my most meaningful and memorable Thanksgiving.
Oh and KK is insisting we go see the Golden Compass movie, which I’m all for anyway. She dragged me into her room to see the commercial tonight, she was all excited about it. Hell, I’m just glad she’s reading. I was beginning to lose hope that she’d ever read.
I would love to have an all-day holiday of just watching MST3Ks (or their modern counterparts, The Film Crew and RiffTrax). Sitting around in comfy clothes with warm drinks, eating carbs and laughing my ass off. Perfect Day.
But, alas, it is not to be most of the time. Meh, could be worse. At least Richard’s fam are good guests and fun and not TOO demanding…
So glad KK is reading. Reading books like the Golden Compass is a very good thing too. The movie looks good from the previews I saw this weekend. I have to say that Nicole Kidman is great casting as the ice princess mother. I have to assume the others are great casting too. I like the witchy-woman on a broom (whose name I forget), or at least the graphics of her flying. Should be good. Definitely subversive, though I imagine they tamed down some of that for our bland stupid American audience.
I sure hope the christians make a big deal about boycotting the movie. That will surely raise the attendance.
Che, that Thanksgiving was not only memorable for us, it was also memorable for Bill Corbett, the 2nd (and bitchier) Crow. He was watching it, discovered the program, wrote to them to say that he was a writer and was impressed by what they were doing. They started a correspondence and he ended up working for them! And becoming Crow no less!
You just never know what a Turkey Day Marathon will bring.
And yes, Heroes sucks ass this year. Fortunately, the producers know it sucks ass, and promised to wrap everything up before Xmas so that next year (provided the writer’s strike ends) it will be like season 3, not the second half of the shitty season 2.
