As long time readers of the Shattered Prayer know, Che used to comment on each new episode of “Lost.”

But then the show got really sucky. And Life got really busy. So no more comments.

I promised I wouldn’t watch it this season. But because of the writer’s strike, there is nothing else on. I got roped back in, and actually found myself enjoying the new writer-strike-shortened season. So here are a few comments about “Lost.”

I started to watch Lost on my birthday, but it featured Jack in the first few minutes, and I can’t stand Jack, so I turned it off. I told Mojo that I wasn’t going to spoil my birthday watching Jack bitch and whine about, well, whatever happened to pass in front of his face. It seems, though, I turned it off too soon. If I had just watched a few more seconds I would have seen that it was not a Jack-centric episode (always the worst of the lot). It was instead a Hurley-centric episode. And those are usually better than the rest.

It wasn’t perfect (Jack was in it), but there were many good things on the episode (Jack wasn’t in it that much).

Things that weren’t so good.

Jack.

Kate.

They are still the two most annoying people on the show. Tivo allows me to fast forward through their scenes, but unfortunately, every now and again, they say something important. So I must sit there and suffer through Jack’s superiority complex and Kate’s wrinkled brow. She often just looks confused. I don’t know what she’s thinking about that makes her brow so furrowed. Maybe it is her motivation for the next scene.

Don’t get me wrong. There was a time I liked her, but the whole “Jack! Sawyer! Jack! Sawyer!” thing made her seem kinda stupid.

And the worst thing?

Naveen Andrews did not take off his shirt (That one was for Che.)

Great things about the episode.

Hurley. He is in a class by himself in the episode. Jorge Garcia is fantastic. I cannot praise him enough. He makes Hurley seem so “real.” You can see the pain, the concern, the love, the happiness in his face. Honestly, I think he is the best actor on the show. He had so many good scenes — realizing Charlie was dead; telling Claire Charlie was dead; standing up to Jack; hugging the cop for offering to take him to a mental institution; talking to dead Charlie; and seeing the shack, with the rocking chair ghost guy inside. But he never gets the praise he deserves. Like Robbie Coltrane before him, his praise will always be obliquely tied to his physique. I am just waiting to hear someone say he is an immense talent, or that he is a weighty actor. Or, my favorite, that he brings a certain gravitas to the role. They always say that about the big guys. Of course, the big gals far much worse. They just call them fat.

Good things about the episode.

Rose and Bernard. I just like them. Can’t help it.

Juliet only had a couple of lines (I must be alone in thinking she is not a great actress. Everyone else seems to love her. She just purses her lips and tilts her head. That doesn’t make her intriguing. At best it simply implies she is dehydrated and has an inner ear infection).

The flash-forwards were better used than they were in the season finale last year. Che and I both said we saw that Flash Forward coming a mile away. It didn’t take us by surprise as it seemed to take everyone else. In fact, I thought it was cheap. But now it is being used to forward the story. In effect, it does raise questions the way the by-now boring flash backs used to.

Desmond only said “Brother” once.

Locke was almost back to his extremely confident former self. He also had gained some weight. It looks good on him.

Jeremy Davies was in it (I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for him ever since “Spanking the Monkey.” ) And, on a more shallow note, I’ve always thought he was cute. Che and I always used to like the ones who were skinny and had a little something wrong with them. Well, that’s Jeremy Davies.

Jack had lost weight. So while still annoying, he was better to look at. But not much.

And the best thing about the show –

Jack looked like an idiot in the end.

Now that is what makes a good episode of “Lost.”

Thanks for the summary! I was wondering about it, but I must take issue with one thing you said.

    “There isn’t anything else on”.

Wrong. There’s Supernatural. And last night on Supernatural, I discovered that Dean will not be nearly as cute as a demon as he is as a human.

But I digress. I can’t agree with you enough that Jack and Kate are insufferable. And if Naveen doesn’t take off his shirt, what IS the point of watching? I also agree that Hurley is great. He really is one of the best on the show.

Lost might get better this season, but I went ahead and gave up. It was stupid to put it on opposite Supernatural, and divide the people who are loyal to both shows. And for their stupidity, I chose to watch Supernatural instead. (did I mention Dean… not so cute as a demon).

“brothar” is annoying, but mmmmm, desmmmmmond…

    and sawyer…

    even jin…

AND, of course, sayid. of course.

poor jack, he started out full of yum and then he started irritating me about seven minutes in. hurley’s WAY more appealing.

Yes, there are a few things on. I never got into Supernatural. We watched the first few shows, and I think there was something on opposite it (Veronica Mars maybe?) so we didn’t continue.

I wanted to like it though. Since one of them was on Gilmore Girls, which I loved.

(True story about my dad and Gilmore Girls. He was flipping through the channels, we weren’t watching TV with him, but were in the same room. He got to Gilmore Girls and Richard Gilmore was talking about insurance and golf and respectable guy things. When he finished and Lorelei opened her mouth to talk, Dad quickly changed channels. Mojo and I thought that was hilarious.)

I was so ready to give up on Lost. As I said, I didn’t even record it on purpose. The Season Pass on Tivo was still set up from last year. But so far, I’m glad it got recorded and I overcame my Jack resistance to watch it.

Poor Jack indeed, Stefficus. In part, he has the thankless job of being the unbeliever on a show about belief, but I do think he could show a LITTLE more range!

Yeah, you do tend to watch a show or two and not give’em much of a chance to develop, Mr Impatient for Instant Gratification. I actually expected NOT to like Supernatural, but got sucked in. Its reasonably intelligent without being laden with a bunch of pretentious twaddle. Its not heavily serialized so you don’t have to inject it intravenously every week, but it has enough of an interesting serialized sub-plot to keep the interest. Its gritty, it has well-developed central characters, and it’s sharp. And there are some cute guys on it, not to mention some nostalgic music. Whats not to like?

And I love that Bela stole the Colt. What a pisser.

I admit that I do that. Even Stargate Atlantis. Mojo starting watching it while I was in the room writing away, so I “heard” it and got a little sucked in. Now that I’ve seen it (actually watched a few shows) some of the people looked nothing like what I imagined they would look like.

I’d also like to know how Jack managed to keep his hair so short, but Sawyer’s grew 4 inches every episode.

  7. Che on February 9, 2008 4:15 pm

And speaking of Stargate Atlantis… okay… is the Dr going to hook up with Ronan, or with McKay? I mean… is there even a choice there? What the hell is she thinking?

  8. Che on February 9, 2008 4:19 pm

I’m totally avoiding work right now. heh.

I am totally thinking of buying Tittybangbang from Amazon.co.uk.

Not that I could watch it with those region 2 prohibitions or anything.

But what a name for a series.

That new Doctor on Stargate used to be on the excellent Firefly (and the movie Serenity) from Joss Whedon of Buffy fame.

She once talked about a fire in her nethers.

  10. Che on February 9, 2008 5:42 pm

If I had Ronan gettin’ snuggly with me, I’d have a fire in my nethers too.

  11. stefficus on February 10, 2008 5:50 am

she was sparkly-brilliant on firefly. but then, practically everyone was.

she was also a half-wraith girl on an earlier ep of atlantis.

and, yeah, i don’t get the whole mckay/ronan… thing. buh-wha? i didn’t even understand why the hell the fact that the lights were turning off and on stopped her from snogging him a couple of shows ago. um, so?? i love smart men, i so really very do, but there are limits and, hey, the dreded one isn’t drooling on himself. score!

  12. Che on February 10, 2008 10:22 am

Lights on and off? I consider that an opportunity, rather than a distraction.

There are times when I think McKay is prolly the only guy on the show neurotic enough for me to date. After all, all my menz seem to end up being a bit natty, if not downright psychopathic.

But of course, I fantasize about being the condiment on the Ronan/Shepard sandwich. Just stick me between’em and spread me. And I’ll try to forget that ronan was ever on Baywatch.

  13. Mojo on February 11, 2008 9:27 pm

I didn’t read all the posts here because I’ve somehow gotten behind 3 shows on Stargate Atlantis — and Richard warned me there were questions here. But I vow to return one day soon to comment on Stargate Atlantis, especially since not one person I know outside of SP watches it Fools and charlatans!
