As of 7:22am EST, Firefox 3 had over 7 million downloads. The fact that I’m up at 7:22 am to know that is a little unsettling. The fact that I even want to know that is downright disturbing.

I get excited over software. My life has really taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Steff emailed me last night saying “I assume you’ve done this.” She assumed correctly, of course. I was camped out on Firefox’s doorstep, waiting for the downloads to start. Just like the time I camped out to see Blue Oyster Cult back in nineteen seventy-somethingmumblemumble. OK, no it wasn’t just like that at all.

Firefox 3 is no Blue Oyster Cult, but it is definitely worth the download. I was expecting there to be some little titchy thing that I didn’t like about it. That always happens. But not this time. So far so good. Its faster, lighter and smoother than FF2, and it has some neat little features that might even prove useful.

So if you haven’t downloaded yet, do it. I have spoken.

Awesome! I did download it, and I like 3.0 better. It is faster and sleeker. The only problem I have is that the TabMix add-on isn’t available for this version. Awww…. Oh well, we can’t have it all.

That was my one complaint, but that isn’t FF’s fault. However, Tab Mix always seems to lag slightly behind the new FF releases, so I expect it will be available soon.

I’m using a couple of Tab extensions right now as a stop-gap, but even combined they aren’t nearly as comprehensive as the wonderful Tab Mix plus.

Good point. I hope they get the new TabMix out soon! I need it! (whining!)

I just emailed you the link to the dev-build of TMP. I was going to wait until the official release but I can’t. I really can’t. I can’t get any work done without my tabs doing what I want them to. I want my browser to do what I tell it to. If I wanted a browser that told me what to do, I’d be using IE.

I actually breathed a sigh of relief when I got TMP installed.

You guys are talking words about computer stuff. Can’t comprehend. Need to go read about Gandhi and Churchill. Mmmmm history.

Maybe I should read a history of Firefox.

Mojo just showed me how to download it and everything. Sometimes I’m such a Luddite.

  7. Richard the Previous on June 18, 2008 10:25 pm

And now they are saying that there is a vulnerability in Firefox rated as High but they aren’t saying what it is. Isn’t that always the way?

  8. Mojo on June 19, 2008 8:15 am

Yay, Che sent me the TMP add on! Poor Luddite Richard. I think he had an Almanac or was a musician or summat.

Meh, they say that about everything, all the time. I’m sure they’ll correct any vulnerabilities v. soon.

Mojo, I think you and I have been brainwashed by firefox. Our mantra “they’ll fix it soon”, uttered with fanatical conviction.

However, if they want to stay on top, they’ll have to fix it soon, and so they will. they don’t want those 8 million downloads rolling back to the previous version.

What I liked about the article saying that there was a bug was that it screamed
“THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH FIREFOX 3!!! SOMETHING HORRIBLE!!! But you don’t need to know what it is.”

  11. Che on June 19, 2008 11:11 am

No, I don’t need to know what it is, and neither does the hacker who’d just lurve to exploit it.

And anyway, it won’t effect anyone who doesn’t engage in unsafe browsing. So use your browser condoms and you should be okay.

  12. Che on June 19, 2008 11:12 am

Erm… you DO have browser condoms, right?

  13. Richard the Previous on June 19, 2008 12:23 pm

    Wouldn’t browse without ‘em!

I figured that was the reason they didn’t reveal it, but I wondered why reveal it at all? Partial information is like a challenge to hackers!

Wooaaahhh… sorry just woke up after my monthly slumber! Hi all!

From Mozilla on the new FF3 features:

“Browse with a Firefox that’s integrated into your computer’s operating system.”

Doesn’t sound very condom to me; especially in a point oh version?

  15. Che on June 19, 2008 4:47 pm

Welcome back Bas! Great to see you!

The OS integration is referring to cosmetic changes. Users of Mac and Linux had complained that FF seemed “separate” from their OS, so FF’s look got a makeover for those systems.

There is NO REASON anyone shouldn’t be using firefox.

Hey! That 3.0 is fast! Loaded pages look different; most are far better now!
