Blog about it.

I tried real hard not to know about this story, but it has insinuated itself into my news-feeds and my consciousness as a kind of morbid fascination. Jeff Simmermon really didn’t do anything that we haven’t done. He got pissy over crappy service at a coffee shop, then he came home and blogged about it.

His post at And I’m Not Lying begins, “Maybe condescending service from a patronizing millenial at a DC coffee shop isn’t news to anyone else…” And really, it shouldn’t have been news, yet somehow, it has become exactly that.

At the same time Simmermon was writing his post, another blogger, Carl Weaver from over at We Love DC was blogging about the same event. You see, he was in line behind Jeff Simmermon when the altercation occurred.

Then pictures of the offending dollar tip showed up on Flickr.

About the same time, BoingBoing picked up the story, thus assuring it would be found by geeks worldwide.

People responded. In droves. The original post garnered over 200 comments, while the BoingBoing post got nearly 200.

On the 16th, the owner of Murky Coffee, Nick Cho, responded with his own post. No one knows how many comments he’s received, because he’s deleting many of them, claiming they are offensive and/or threatening. (and yet its okay for him to swear at Simmermon, and threaten to punch in the privates. Hrm…

BoingBoing posted about Cho’s response, resulting in another flurry of comments, and a delightful search for synonyms for “kerfuffle”. (I like “foofaraw” myself).

Oh, and the debate creators over at CreateDebate did what they do best, the created a debate on the issue.

All this is a pretty average week on the internet. And I think the reason people responded so profusely and passionately is because they can identify with the situation. We’ve all been the recipient of bad customer service, or we’ve been an employee who has had to deal with a lousy customer (most of us have been in both situations).

But is it news?

Well it must be, because the Washington Post has now covered the story. Was the 17th a slow news day? Obama and McCain were behaving themselves? No natural disasters? No increase in the price of oil? No murders or armed robberies? No kittehs up trees?

I tell ya, next time Burger King leaves the fries out of my order I’m calling the Washington Post!
