Well I attempted to write some funny stuff earlier but since I’m not feeling in a particularly funny mood it just sounded forced, and somewhat painful. So I’ll just try to broach a neutral subject in a neutral tone and leave it at that.
Some of our readers are switching to firefox. Whoa! All my bitching paid off I guess. But I also realised some folks may not yet know how to get the best performance from their firefox. There are tons of plugins and extensions and sifting through them can be confusing (though to be honest, I think its fun. Nothing like downloading new stuff. Geminis are neophiles for sure).
Here’s a list of what I use, and if anyone out there has any suggestions as to what I might like, based on what I already have, please leave a comment.
- Performancing: Awsome stuff. Its for bloggers, its a blog editor that sits in your browser window and is collapsable. Extremely full-featured. Supports categories, technorati tags, nots, multiple blogs, stats, bookmarks and more. This post was made with Performancing.
- TabMix Plus: If you have firefox and don’t have this, then really… you don’t have firefox. Totally optimises and customises your tabs. Couldn’t do without it.
- PermaTab: This sets a tab or tabs of your choice to permanent, so that they never close. This is great for dumbasses like me that are always closing tabs by accident. For some reason I always manage to click on that little red X. But when the little red X is taken away… ah… problem solved. I use it to keep gmail and netvibes open.
- CoolIris: Gives link previews on mouseover, so you don’t waste your time going to a sucky page. Really handy if you use google a lot, and if its just quick info I’m looking for, I don’t even have to click the link, I can just grab what I want from the preview. The earlier version used to crash on me on occasion, the updated version does not.
- Adblock: Of course. Who doesn’t use this one?
- Fasterfox: Speeds up firefox without having to piss around with the configuration files.
- Clippings: Manages frequently entered text.
- Adsense Notifier: Sits in your status bar and displays your adsense stats. Updates as frequently as you like. For those of you who use adsense, obviously. Doesn’t do the rest of you any good.
- Gmail Skins: Beautifies and streamlines your gmail. And if you aren’t using gmail, why not? I know JtO and RtheP both use yahoo. all I have to say is, JtO, RtP, WtF. I realise that yahoo has recently upgraded in an attempt to compete with gmail but lets face it. It can’t. Not to mention, its called yahoo. Can it get any more uncouth than that? Its just a step shy of yeeeeeee-haaaaaah.
And thats about it for my extensions. Well, those are the ones I use. I also have Google notebook, which I use sometimes but mostly forget its there. and I have Password Creator, but don’t really use it . I have one of the RSS feed plugins as well, but since I use netvibes as my homepage, I can’t really say I use the RSS thing much either.

Hello, did you noticed the Firefox extension http://eco.netvibes.com/tools/ ?
It allows you to add new feeds to Netvibes easily. Hope it will be useful.
Bless you, Maurice, I’m checking it out now.
Thanks! Sounds like just what I need.
Help me please…
I just installed Firefox 2.0, and all of a sudden, my username/password isn't being inserted in the signon window (it always was before). I tried the usual suspects–I did not mistakenly tell FF not to remember the password for this site; and I also tried the remember password bookmarklet, but all to no avail–FF will not ask me to remember this password. What do I need to do to get around this?
Will, I assume you navigated to the Tools |Options | Security |Passwords and checked the box to “Remember Passwords”? Perhaps your troubles run deeper than my simple solution…? If so, this link may help: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Master_password
Good luck… FF is still the best out there, even if it has a few issues in 2.0!
I’m finally beginning to warm to Firefox 2.0 now. Most of my favourite addons have been updated to work with 2.0, and those that haven’t, I’ve managed to force into action with a few tweaks and hacks. There are a couple of interface issues that I’m still not thrilled about, but overall I enjoy the speed and security of FF 2, so I can finally bring myself to recommend an updgrade, but with the addendum: folks, check the extensions site to make sure your favourite extensions have been upgraded to work with 2.0 before installing 2.0.
Will’s problem depends on what specific site he’s having trouble with. Is it one website only? Is it all websites? Or is it the Master Password?
I have not yet had the courage to upgrade. I’ll probably go for it after they work out the bugs.
Che makes a good point about the sites. I had trouble with a couple of sites but their login methods were, um, odd. So, FF refused to work with them. One of them used to work, but they got fancy on me, and then the password manager didn’t work anymore.
The key point to keep in mind is that no matter what FF does, it’s still better than IE. Yes, even IE 7 which has been causing all sorts of trouble for my friends who still insist on using that p.o.s. (or who have no choice due to work restrictions, etc. — poor souls!).
Please add firefox cookies/bad web sites immunization in next version!
Firefox 2 cannot reject third party cookies!!!!!!!!
Okay Jude, I’ll do that… oh wait. I don’t work for firefox.
And anyway, I’m a firm believer in keeping firefox minimalist and customisable. If you want firmer control over cookie permissions, you might try an extension like CookieSafe, which can be found here:

Forget it Che.. It’s too late to bail out. You’re the official Reverend of Firefox now.
